Compounding

Compounding

Compounding

Pharmacy compounding is the art and science of preparing personalized medications for patients. Compounded medications are made based on a practitioners prescription in which individual ingredients are mixed together in the exact strength and dosage form required by the patient. This method allows the compounding pharmacist to work with the patient and the prescriber to customize a medication to meet the patient’s specific needs.

A Brief History of Compounding

At one time, nearly all prescriptions were compounded. With the advent of mass drug manufacturing in the 1950s and ‘60s, compounding rapidly declined. The pharmacist’s role as a preparer of medications quickly changed to that of a dispenser of manufactured dosage forms, and most pharmacists no longer were trained to compound medications. However, the “one-size-fits-all” nature of many mass-produced medications meant that some patients’ needs were not being met.

Innovative Compounding Technology & Techniques Meet Patient Needs

Fortunately, compounding has experienced a resurgence as modern technology and innovative techniques and research have allowed more pharmacists to customize medications to meet specific patient needs.

Trained, PCCA member pharmacists can now personalize medicine for patients who need specific:

  • Strengths
  • Dosage forms
  • Flavors
  • Ingredients excluded from medications due to allergies or other sensitivities

Veterinary Compounding Too!

Veterinary compounding is a growing area of practice within pharmacy compounding, in which specialized pharmacists prepare customized medications for patients, by prescription order, when a practitioner determines that an off-the-shelf medication is not appropriate for the patient. Compounded therapies for animals, whether pets, working animals or exotics, are prepared in a wide array of customized dosages and dosage forms including topical sprays, oral medications, transdermal gels and creams.

Once therapy is begun, the compounding pharmacist will continue to work with a patient and prescriber/veterinarian to make sure the specialized preparations are working correctly, adjusting the dosage if necessary for the unique needs of the individual patient.

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is a growing practice in pharmacy compounding, in which specialized pharmacists prepare customized medications for patients, by prescription order, when a practitioner determines that an off-the-shelf medication is not appropriate for the patient. HRT is most often prescribed to ease the symptoms of menopause, but it also can be used to treat a variety of conditions that women of all ages may experience, including:

  • Pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS)
  • Irregular menstrual cycle
  • Moodiness
  • Infertility
  • Post-partum depression
  • Weight gain
  • Endometriosis
  • Fibrocystic breasts
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Hot flashes
  • Night sweats
  • Decreased libido
  • Painful sexual intercourse
  • Vaginal dryness

These conditions affect millions of women. As the number of women seeking hormone-related treatment has grown, so has the mass production of pills, patches and creams by the drug industry. However, each woman’s body is different and has its own unique needs, but commercially manufactured products tend to be “one-size-fits-all,” and do not always account for the differences between individuals.
Working closely with a woman and her healthcare provider, a compounding pharmacist can help a woman start and maintain a hormone replacement regimen that brings her hormones back into balance and closely mimics what her body has been doing naturally for years. With a healthcare provider’s prescription, the pharmacist can prepare hormones in a variety of strengths and dosage forms, including:

  • Capsules
  • Topical or vaginal creams, gels, and foams
  •  Suppositories
  • Sublingual drops or troches

Once the therapy is begun, the pharmacist will continue to work with the woman and her prescriber to make sure the HRT is working correctly, adjusting the dosage if necessary, ensuring that the medication is just right for her body.

Side Effects/Risks

Like any medication, vaccines can cause side effects. The most common side effects are mild. On the other hand, many vaccine-preventable disease symptoms can be serious, or even deadly. Even though many of these diseases are rare in this country, they still occur around the world. Unvaccinated U.S. citizens who travel abroad can bring these diseases to the U.S., putting unvaccinated children at risk.

The side effects from vaccines are almost always minor (such as redness and swelling where the shot was given) and go away within a few days. If your child experiences a reaction at the injection site, use a cool, wet cloth to reduce redness, soreness, and swelling.

Serious side effects after vaccination, such as severe allergic reaction, are very rare and doctors and clinic staff are trained to deal with them. Pay extra attention to your child for a few days after vaccination. If you see something that concerns you, call your child’s doctor.
